So! I had every intention of signing up for Yuletide for the first time ever, and then I didn't because of a combination of RL factors. Which is sad-making but here we are. So, instead of that, I am offering a mini gift-fic to anyone who wants one (IF they are in one of the fandoms I am currently interested in). Comment in the link below with your AO3 username, fandom, prompt and/or things you'd like in a gift fic, along with your definite Do Not Wants.

You can prompt more than once, for as many fandoms as you like, but I’ll write only one gift per person

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_D1VPUy_Z4BqkLM8AYw5H76n8XHkyKuhx84wWog5NjI/edit#gid=0

The fandoms I am offering are
1. Guardian: Zhao Yunlan/Shen Wei + Any of the other characters in non shippy ways
2. Guardian RPF: Zhu Yilong/Bai Yu
3. Nirvana in Fire: Jingyan/MCS, Nihuang/MCS, Lin Chen/MCS, poly combinations of the aforementioned, Jingrui/Yujin, Xiao Dong/Nihuang + any of the other characters in non shippy ways
4. When A Snail Falls in Love: Xu Xu/Ji Bai, Yao Meng/Zhao Han, poly combination or just team fic
5. Her Private Life: Ryan Gold/Deok Mi + any of the other characters in non shippy ways
6. The Untamed: Anything involving Nie Huaisang, Lan Sizhui and the baby disciples or the Wen siblings. (ok, this one comes with a caveat. For this fandom, I will not write any Meng Yao/Jin Guangyao ship or redemption arc of any kind. Please keep that in mind.)
7. Dr Qin, Medical Examiner: Qin Min/Da Bao/Lin Tao (Only OT3 please)

Things I will not write: Non-con, non-canonical major character death (I may write major character death if it's already a part of the canon), bestiality, ABO, any kind of terminal illness (so no cancer, dementia etc), hard BDSM

So prompt away. I will start posting the week before Yuletide (19th-24th). The fics will probably be short but I'll try to get up to at least 800-1k words per recipient

Edit: This is now closed. Excited to write gifts

I have been shockingly remiss in using my DW account, but it's lovely to be in a fandom again where old skool fans are going back to DW as a platform. So as my first post in....um...nearly a decade, here is a round up of the fics that I have written in the fandom that has eaten my brain. Thanks for Nothing, Guardian

Fics behind Cut )That's the lot so far. Just wanted them in one place.

If you haven't seen Avatar: the Last Airbender or Avatar: The Legend of Korra what are you doing? Don't stay here looking at this post. Go forth, buy, borrow, download. AtLA and Korra are among the most interesting, nuanced, fascinatingly constructed genre television programming I have ever watched, with superbly etched out characters and outstanding world-building, and has introduced one of the most interesting character arcs I have ever seen, in a show for children or for adults. Also, and as a fan of colour, it was an amazing experience to see chromatic characters on my screen, mainstream, front and centre, good and bad, black, white and grey (characterization not race) and general \o/. So unsurprising then that the meta that fandom wrote on this show was both expansive and engaging.

But there have been some posts on tumblr lately, that have me, and other fans like me going wtf? The post in question:

Apparently I should be ashamed of this, but I am not: I LOVE MUSICAL THEATRE! I really really do. I've been to at least 6 musicals in my short stint in London (ok, some of them were shite). I shamelessly pimp musical theatre to unsuspecting and captive friends. I sing Defying Gravity in the shower, I am that person!

So let’s talk about the not so recent trend across fandoms for Alpha/Omega fics heavily featuring knotting, heats and more likely than not mpreg. The trend started, as kink trends so often do in the SPN fandom (take a bow, guys) and now seem pervasive in several other fandoms, particularly in the XMFC fandom. And I will admit to enjoying the kink. It takes the D/S dynamics that I have loved in fic for years to the next level, often leads to excellent character and world building and deals with many issues of preassigned sexual and gender roles, often in fascinating subversive ways. But, with a number of fics popping up on my flist and dash over the last few weeks, I have had a couple of thinky thoughts. Actually, one major thinky thought, and one fic idea/plot bunny that I offer to fandom as my gift for reading through this drivel.

All my thoughts... No kink shaming )

Thanks for reading and a very good evening. Back to the porn now

Since apparently I haven't met a meme I didn't like, snagged from [livejournal.com profile] sabrina_il
These are all (well mostly) hugely popular fandom, and so should be a cinch to guess. [livejournal.com profile] zorana84 will know all of them, because I can't stop talking about them

1. Think of up to 20 ships you support.
2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
3. Have your audience guess as many of the ships as they can.
4. Fandom hints will be given if asked in the comments.

I don't think there are enough people on my flist to play this game with, but what the hell.

Another TV show that I have done make up. This cast list is courtesy the lovely [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait who has been more than patient, since I took absolute ages to get around to it (P.S. If you like FakeTV btw, check out every single thing she's done, it's all genius). Hope you like this bb

I love X-Men! I have loved it since I was 8... I watched both the cartoons, collected comic books, and yes, watched the movies, including the execrable X-3... I was wary, very wary indeed about X Men: First Class... but amazingly it was actually a lot of fun.. Some very strong performances, a strong if somewhat truncated narrative, excellent action sequences, fantastically quaint 1960s setting! But as always, I came away grumpy! X-Men has historically had some of the strongest, most engaging female characters of any comic book canon (The originals like Storm and Mystique, later additions like Rogue, Wanda etc), and XMFC was a bit of a letdown in its depiction of women... So I did what one does, when one feels the need for moar awesome ladies... I genderswapped... With the help of the lovely [livejournal.com profile] manderkitty I picked the men and women that I'd have chosen for XMFC had the genders been reversed

Snagged from across the interwebz. Since I lurk on the LJs of about a 100,000 people, I saw this marvellous meme which involved prompting of seven actors and then making up a TV show about them with a blurb and character descriptions. I basically seal-clapped as [livejournal.com profile] leupagus; [livejournal.com profile] robanybody; and [livejournal.com profile] seren_ccd among others made up fabulous, brilliant, inventive shows, and then poked [livejournal.com profile] seren_ccd until she gave me one of my own. So what to write I thuoght. well, of the many things I love, I love two things most of all - awesome women and historical drama. So without further ado I give you

Two rants in a month?  I'm on a roll.  But I believe that I genuinely have something to say about the recent outrage regarding a certain fic set in Haiti in the spn_j2_bigbang.  Again, it's something that's been intensely discussed and fantastic points about privilege, racism and ignorance have been highlighted, but as a FoC there are responses from the enlightened part of fandom that I just don't understand, and I think they need to be queried.
Thus Spake... )
tanndell: (Default)
Now I am not usually a ranter. Hell, if you look at my LJ history, I'm not even much of a poster. But sometimes things come up that force you to speak. Even if virtually everyone you know has already spoken about it, and usually infinitely more eloquently than you even could. But the events of Wincon 2008, and the various responses that followed got me thinking. And here are the results.
Sometimes I am so ashamed )

So... this is actually uncanny... right down to how being all happy becomes downright annoying... I think I'll start being all brooding now... Just to compensate

you are lightcyan

Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well.

Your saturation level is very low - you have better things to do than jump headfirst into every little project. You make sure your actions are going to really accomplish something before you start because you hate wasting energy making everyone else think you're working.

Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation.

There are shows that grab the imagination of fandom almost immediately, shows that creep up on fandom, and shows that get no fandom love at all. In my eight years or so lurking around fandom, I haven't been able to map any patterns in this progression. Merlin and Torchwood would be examples of the first, Psych would be an example of the second, and I'm very afraid that Being Human is going to be an example of the third. For this reason I feel it incumbent upon me to sell the show to every fanficcer out there, in the hope that someone will pick it up and pay it forward, because this show deserves a whole lotta love. As a fan of genre television, and particularly genre television with complicated interpersonal narratives and dilemmas, Being Human had me at hello, and I need to read awesome fic about its fascinating characters and somewhat complex universe. So here I go, on my very first Pimp Post and be warned there will be spoilers behind the cut!!!!

However before I take off on my pairings and expectations from the large and fertile fandom that this show should have, I have to outline the important roles played by at least four of the minor characters of the show. If I haven't sold you on Being Human already, then perhaps fleshing out the other characters will do it. So in Pimp Post Part II, coming up soon on this LJ, Nina, Herrick, Owen and Lauren, where do they all fit in with our three protagonists, and how do I see them being an important part of fic. So stay tuned

So I was rereading one of my favourite fics ever today, rageprufrocks ‘Bell Curve’ set in an SGA AU, and found myself very seriously contemplating a staple of fandom – the hurt/comfort element.  Now, I have to admit that I’m a fan of h/c when it’s done as well as ‘Bell Curve’ does it.  As long as it’s germane to the plot, and the protagonists continue to act true to character, h/c can not only advance the story line, but also add an element of genuine grace under pressure to the fic.  What I do object to is a pet project of h/c writers – gratuitous whump leading to OOC behaviour on the part of both the hurtee and the comforter, with no beginning, end or possibly foreseeable middle.

Reader I hurted him... )

To end with an invitation, rec to me your favourite h/c slash fics in any TV fandom and tell me why you love it. I promise to give it a fair shot. I don’t promise not to disagree.

tanndell: (Default)

I find myself in a slashers dilemma, emerging from a fandom I got into a while ago, and the problem centres around OTP’s.  Now as all slashers know, finding niche pairings written in a fandom is rare, finding good ones is rarer still.  In all my previous fandoms, this was never a problem because I loved my OTP’s.  Mckay/Sheppard, House/Wilson, Fraser/RayK, Harry/Draco, Duncan/Methos, all these pairings had me love either one or both of them enough to read the fiction as it stood, and there was an almost unlimited amount of fic to read.  Then I discovered Magnificent Seven.  The 1998 TV Series, based very sketchily on the Yul Brynner/Steve Mcqueen movie of the same name, had all the ingredients to delight a slashers heart, and hit several of my personal buttons, namely good-looking men, horses, the Western motif etc.  I couldn’t wait to watch the series and get down to the Chris/Vin slash that seemed to pervade the fandom.  I did, and it was a pile of smoking fail.

Has anyone else suffered from this dilemma?  I suddenly find myself sympathizing with the Ronon/Sheppard, Draco/Ron etc shippers of the world.  It’s hard to be picky about this kind of thing.  Go on, tell me all about it.

My shame knows no bounds... After haunting other people's LJ accounts for two whole years, reading their fics, grinning over the comments, totally loving their picspams, manips and what-have-yous I have finally opened an LJ account of my own.  Partly because I am now unemployed and therefore have more time to spend on the thrice damned internet... Partly because my neighbours have unsecured wifi connections and so... SCORE!  Who am I and what do I do, you ask?  I answer, I am an ex-journalist, a sometimes student of Eng Lit, and a total pop-culture junkie.  My addiction has no limits.  From TV shows, to movies, to books, to graphic novels (comics, people, comics), I embrace them all, because I really am just that geeky.  Love me as I am, I beseech you, and if not, do not abuse me, because I am sensitive deep inside.  My friends would disagree, but who cares about their mocking opinions.  Well, introductions are over, and from tomorrow, god willing, there shall be substance, I vow.... Take care all.
